在過去的十幾年當中,與高能研磨密切相關的機械合金化技術以其新穎的粉末合成方式展示出強大的生命力。以這種方式,許多由常規途徑無法達到的,並且遠遠偏離熱力學平衡狀態的特殊復合材料應運而生,如非晶態或納米材料。通過這種粉末生產工藝還可使在傳統的熔煉技術條件下互不相溶的合金元素以機械合金化的形式合成出來。
    機械合金化可通過固態反應引導材料晶體結構的轉變。在研磨過程中吉布斯自由能強烈升高,促進晶體材料從亞穩態到穩定狀態的演變,由此加速了固態反應,相與相之間達到冶金結合,晶粒尺寸一般為納米級。粉末顆粒之間的相互反應可描述為塑性變形,撕裂及冷焊三個主要過程的綜合效應。兩種或多種不同類的材料在上述過程的反復作用下,被均勻彌散的研磨在一起。由此而形成的機械合金材料常常顯示出超常的物理及機械特性,如超韌性,超強度或用於製造固體潤滑材料。
    高能臥式轉子研磨機(Simoloyer)是一種新型的集高能研磨,機械合金化及反應研磨技術于一體的現代化研磨設備。該設備帶有一個研磨倉,一水平式轉子及適量研磨球,可適用於干法及濕法研磨。研磨倉的容量從0.5-900升不等。此設備的主要特征是備有空氣密封系統,可調式預密封元件,可抽真空倉及旋轉密封。由於整機為水平放置,研磨球因受重力影響而造成的非均勻分布狀態得以避免,從而使得研磨球產生的碰撞動能均勻分布在每個角落。加上轉子的高強度設計,可使轉子的轉速比傳統球磨機高出2-3倍,由此產生了高能效應。
